Conquering Skin Cancer is not your average documentary; it’s a compelling social impact film with a mission to prevent skin cancer.

In a country where the “bronzed Aussie” image has led to more skin cancer deaths than road accident fatalities, the World Health Organisation predicts a staggering 68% increase in melanoma deaths by 2040. But this is not set in stone. And although Australia has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world (Cancer Council), most skin cancers can be prevented.

Weaving together compelling and emotional stories from survivors, advocates, and world-leading experts, the second instalment in the international Conquering Cancer Campaign delves into how every body can live safely under the sun.

Conquering Skin Cancer features prominent and beloved voices in this important space. Faces you might recognise include 2024 Australians of the Year Professors Richard Scolyer and Georgina Long, Australian media icon Deborah Hutton, Olympian Cate Campbell, World Champion Surfer Wayne
‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew, and beloved Australian actor Hugh Jackman.

Inspirational activists such as Jay Allen (Australia Skin Cancer Foundation), Tamara Dawson (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Advocacy Network), Scott Maggs (Skin Check Champions) and Anne Gately (Author, “Sunburnt”) also feature, sharing their personal stories in the pursuit of positive change.

Featured Cast: Hugh Jackman, Cate Campbell, Deborah Hutton, Costa Georgiadis, Georgina Long, Richard Scolyer, Wayne Bartholomew, Mike Hill, Sue Collins.

Only in cinemas in Australia from 20 November 2024.

"I'm often asked what I'm working on? As a producer on Conquering Skin Cancer, I share info on our new film. It always surprises me that as soon as I mention skin cancer, no matter who I'm speaking to, they almost always start to share their own story with skin cancer or that of their family member or friend.

I shouldn't be surprised because 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer. But I look around every day at people sunbaking in the park or playing sport in the heat of the day. Protecting our skin from harmful UV isn't hard. We know what to do. We know to wear hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and seek shade. But we don't do it?

It has to become part of our daily routines. Picking low UV times to play outdoors and covering up when we can't. You don't have to stop living and enjoying being outdoors, but you can make decisions that will reduce your risk to develop skin cancer. Because 98% of skin cancers are preventable.

If you're not convinced, get along and see our new film Conquering Skin Cancer in cinemas across Australia this December. It could save your life!"

How does a truck driver from Western Sydney change the lives of future generations? Earlier this week we shared a bit of Jay Allen’s story with you. If you thought he was a top bloke a before, wait until you learn what he’s achieved!

Following his melanoma diagnosis, Jay began campaigning to ban solariums; from meeting media in cafes, to grasping a raw chicken in one hand and a cooked one in the other to illustrate to his community cabinet meeting how damaging solariums were.

Eventually, his unconventional methods were successful, and solariums were banned in Australia.

Do not wait- tickets are already selling and some sessions will sell out. If you're planning to see Conquering Skin Cancer in Australian Cinemas in December (and we know all you Aussie's are...) then head to the booking link in our bio and pick your seats now.

And if you're thinking.. 'Gees guys, bit early isn't it'. We get it, it is early for cinema tickets. So think of it this way, we're an Independent Australian film and we don't have the marketing power of the Hollywood blockbusters, so pre sales are really important to the films success. And any support you can give to help us spread the word is 'HUGELY' appreciated.

Can't wait to share the Official Trailer with you all in a few days!

Oh, and if you've got 5 minutes, now is a great time to book your tickets.

Go on. Head to our bio and click through the booking links.

Your support makes us so happy!
😄😀😁😆🙂

Thank you from the whole Conquering Skin Cancer team.

We’re sharing the story of another remarkable human - Tamara Dawson.  She has lived through the unthinkable.  Receiving a stage 4 melanoma diagnosis when her son was just one year old. It’s hard to imagine how scary and difficult this must have been.  But fortunately, Tamara is still with us 9 years later and sharing her powerful story to help others.

Tamara grew up on a beef farm in Australia, spending her childhood outdoors, blissfully unaware of the dangers of UV exposure. But in early 2015, everything changed when she was diagnosed with stage four melanoma that had spread to her liver. As a mother of a one-year-old and in her mid-thirties, she was facing down the unthinkable.

Tamara shares her personal journey through diagnosis and treatment, and the challenges of living with cancer. Tamara has become a passionate advocate now that she is aware of the importance of awareness and prevention in Australia, where complacency about skin cancer is all too common.

Fuelled by her experience, Tamara founded the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Advocacy Network (MSCAN) to advocate for those affected by this disease. The mission is to create change and ensure that no one feels alone in their battle.

Jay is one of those people that you feel better for knowing. His passion for supporting survivors on their skin cancer journey’s and also helping countless others to prevent skin cancer with his skin check trucks shines through every word he says.

Jay’s own story began after regularly using solariums throughout his twenties. He noticed a tiny, bleeding mole on his ankle. And that tiny mole changed Jay’s life forever.

It was melanoma, and it was a wake-up call.

Sounds good doesn’t it, doing things together. And when you learn that 98% of skin cancers are preventable, then you know there’s a lot we can do together.

* You can wear sunscreen and remind your friends and family to wear it as well.

* You can wear sunglasses and long sleeves or shirts with a collar when you’re out in the sun.

* Wear a hat and remind your friends to do the same.

* Seek shade when you can, sit under a tree or umbrella. Our friends at @coolcabanas make some portable, easy to use pop up shade solutions. We’ve even had some giveaways and will run some more - so keep an eye out on our Instagram @conqueringcancercampaign

* Check the UV index before you head out (yep, there are apps that tell you the #UVindex by location) and if it’s high UV, maybe choose a different time of day to do the activity, and if that’s not possible, do the above and wear sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and clothing that covers you more. We like the Sunsmart Global UV app https://www.sunsmart.com.au/resources/sunsmart-app

You don’t have to stop going outdoors, you don’t have to stop doing the things you love. But you can make decisions that will reduce your exposure to UV rays and protect your skin. And you can remind your friends and family to do the same.

UV radiation can’t be seen or felt and can be harmful on warm, sunny days and on cool, cloudy days too.

If you’re an Aussie then you know the Slip Slop Slap @sunsmartvic
, all you need to do is… do it… and together we can prevent skin cancer.

2/3 Australians will develop a skin cancer throughout their lifetimes- so let’s learn a bit more about the three main types, and how to prevent them.

Basal cell carcinomas are by far the most common skin cancers; sometimes affecting people as young as in their early twenties.

BCC’s can generally be easily removed when detected early; but clusters can form quickly if left undetected.

Prevention is key- stay sun safe, and if in doubt, get a skin check!

Stay tuned for our other skin cancers in the spotlight coming throughout this week.
